The Bokashi Bucket

The key to the success of this system is the specifically designed Bokashi Bucket, and the use of EM Bokashi.

Bokashi is a Japanese term that means “fermented organic matter. EM Bokashi is a pleasant smelling product made using a combination of sawdust and bran that has been infused with Effective Micro-organisms (EM). EM Bokashi has traditionally been used to increase the microbial diversity and activity in soils and to supply nutrients to plants.

  • Place your kitchen waste into the bucket, then sprinkle a hand full of EM Bokashi over the waste.
  • Repeat this layering process until the Bokashi Bucket is full.
  • Drain off liquid (Bokashi juice) as necessary.

Once the bucket is full to capacity, the waste can be buried. If you have two Bokashi Buckets, begin the process again in your second bucket. Let the waste from the first Bokashi Bucket continue to ferment for 10-14 days or for any additional length of time. Then, bury the waste and wash out Bokashi Bucket ready to use when your second Bokashi Bucket is full. If you have only one Bokashi Bucket the waste can be buried as soon as it is full, obviously the waste on the top has not had much or any chance to ferment, even so, the waste will still break down quickly because of the micro-organisms mixed in.

With two Bokashi Buckets the waste gets extra time to ferment, you will get more of the valuable Bokashi Juice and it is more convenient, however, this wonderful composting system will still work with just one Bokashi Bucket. Bokashi Compost will look different to other compost that has decayed. As the food waste does not breakdown or decompose while it is in the bucket, much of its original physical property will remain and it will have a pickled appearance. Breakdown of waste will occur after it has been transferred to the soil.

Bokashi Juice

As the kitchen waste starts to ferment, Bokashi Juice will form in the bottom of the bucket. This should be drained off as it builds up.

  • Bokashi Juice can be diluted with water and makes a terrific fertiliser for garden or pot plants.
  • It can be poured down drains and it is safe to use in septic tanks.

When used in drains it will help to clean up our water ways by competing with harmful bacteria.

Can of Worms

Can of worms

The Can-O-Worms is an odourless, user friendly system that allows anyone to participate in recycling. Whether you live in an apartment or have a backyard, you can provide organic fertiliser for indoor plants and your garden. For keen fishermen the unit will breed up to 20,000 bait worms which are easily removed from the top! Its patented concept was awarded an Australian Design Award.

A simple Instruction Manual explains the operation of the system with common questions and answers.

Harvesting of castings (worm poo) is easy because the worms eat their way up leaving their rich castings behind whichare readily removed, free of worms. Liquid fertiliser is also produced and dispensed through a tap.

The Can-O-Worms is fly and pest proof and stands on five sturdy legs. It is fun and educational exercise the whole family can participate in. It is made here in Australia by an Australian company from 100% recycled plastic.

Worm habitat

In response to a need to deal with larger amounts of organic waste on a sustainable scale, our supplier of the can of worms has recently developed the Worm Habitat. Retro-fitting a wheelie bin provides a low cost effective and easy to use system with the following benefits:

Readily available and locally made;
Strong, sturdy, safe and recyclable;
Recognized widely as waste receptacles;
Constructed with the potential for having standard colours for different waste types;
Of large capacity without being bulky and are moveable.
Of a good height to employ a 'never-fill' system providing the worms with depth and the ability turn compost to castings before harvesting.

our Worm Habitat worm farms are available in different colours. The standard Worm Habitat is green with red lid while others are red, orange, purple, blue and white.

The Worm Habitat is quick to set-up (1/2 hr) and very easy to maintain.
Firstly, find a shady spot for the Worm Habitat, prepare the bedding and introduce the worms. After a day you can start feeding. To avoid overfeeding, feed the worms only when there is approx 20% of the previous feed left. Use the food cover (provided) to keep the feed layer moist and dark for the worms. To tap off the liquid fertilizer use the collector tray provided. When the worm farm fills up with castings, unscrew the port-hole and dig out the casting with a small spade or hand-trowel. Maintaining a healthy worm farm is straight forward, make sure that the worms have enough moisture and food and that they are not too hot or too cold. Every now and then throw in a handful of garden lime or dolomite to keep things sweet. Don’t forget Worms Downunder offers unlimited free phone/email back-up support for all their products to ensure their customers complete success.
